Vitiligo

WHAT IS IT

This is a disease causing depigmentation of the skin and mucus membrane

There is some malfunctioning with the cell (MELANOCYTES)  which produce skin pigment (MELANIN).

 

ITS CAUSES

  1. Genetic  / Hereditary
  2. Autoimmune
  3. Stress

ITS SIGN AND SYMPTOMS

White patches are seen on normal pigmented skin

Mainly seen near orifices like  mouth , eyes , umblicus , nostril , genetalia

ITS TREATMENT

As such there is no treatment which cure this disease completely ,  researches are going on in this field

But there are some treatment modalities for this diseases

Camouflage : White patches can be made hidden with makeup or different camouflage cosmetics available in market ( DERMACOLOR ,this is a cosmetic product which comes in different shades and patient choose one of them according to his or her skin texture and type , this product is very good for hiding white spots )

Repigmentation : Reversal of white patches into normal skin can be done with  

  •   Corticosteroids
  •    PUVA Therapy

Depigmentation : Case where patient suffer from extensive vitiligo ,depigmentation of normal skin can be done with use of some drugs like

  • monobenzone
  • Hydroquinone 

Surgery  : This is one of the last option , here most commanly grafting is done , but this field has got various recent advances

 

ROLE OF DIET IN VITILIGO

 I have seen that diet has a very important role in cause and cure of vitiligo

Various food items to be consumed

  1. FRUITS :
    1. Anjeer ( Fig)
    2. Blueberries (Falsa)
    3. Raspberries
    4. Banana
    5. Pears 
    6. Apple
    7. Pineapple
    8. Mango
    9. Papaya
  2. VEGETABLES :
    1. Beetroot 
    2. Cucumber 
    3. Carrots
    4. Spinach 
    5. Peas
    6. Chillies
    7. Ginger
    8. Long gourd(Loki)
    9. Onions
    10. Garlic
  3. CEREALS  :
    1. Whole grain food
    2. Oat
    3. Barley 
    4. Rice 
  4. DRY FRUITS :
    1. Almond
    2. Fig 
    3. Walnut 
    4. Resins 
  5. DRINKS : 
    1. Green tea with mint
    2. Tea without sugar
    3. Honey
    4. LOTS AND LOTS OF WATER
  6. OILS TO BE USED :
    1.  Olive
    2. Mustard
    3. Pure oil extracted from butter (Cow’s butter)
  7. VITAMINS AND MINERALS :
    1. Vit B
    2. Folic Acid
    3. zinc
    4. Copper

Various food items not to be consumed

Salty food stuff , Fats , Spices , Fried food , Pickle

Sour food : Citrus fruits ( orange, lemon , amla ) , Tamarind

Non – Vegetarian Stuff : Beef , Meat , Chicken , Egg , Sea Food

Drinks  : Strong tea , coffee , Alcohol ,milk ( to some extent) ,Flavoured Drink ,Ice cream

(please do avoid any consumable fooditem which contain PRESERVATIVE)
